The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to ban Danfo and Korope buses along the Lekki-Epe corridor starting October 1, 2024. This is part of the state’s Bus Reform Initiative, which aims to improve public transportation and better serve the residents of Lagos.
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that this initiative will replace Danfo buses with mass transit buses on the Lekki-Epe route. Danfo buses that comply with the Vehicle Inspection Service standards will continue to operate as mid-capacity buses, while compliant Korope buses will be integrated into the First Mile Last Mile services for interior roads from Obalende/CMS to Ajah.
Giwa highlighted the current disorder in bus operations on this corridor and the need to regulate and integrate the informal transport sector into the Bus Reform Initiative. The primary objective is to restructure commercial bus operations and provide a comfortable and efficient public transportation system for Lagos residents. He warned that operators who violate the regulations will face fines and potential vehicle forfeiture if fines are ignored.
He also noted that designated routes will be assigned, and strict monitoring will ensure compliance. An e-ticketing system will be introduced to enhance passenger comfort.
Giwa further revealed that a stakeholders’ meeting was held on June 27th, involving heads of Transport Unions, key Transport Operators, officials from the State’s Ministry of Transportation, and other relevant parties, where all concerns were addressed and a communique was signed.
