Gunmen kidnap father and son in Kwara State, Nigeria

In Isanlu-Isin town, Isin Local Government of Kwara State, gunmen believed to be kidnappers have abducted a father and son. The victims, Deacon Femi Ajayi, a staff member of Baptist Grammar School in Oke Ayegun, Isanlu-Isin, and his father, were taken at around 7 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Prior to the abduction, the kidnappers reportedly damaged their vehicle and then took them to an undisclosed location.

The spokesperson of the state police command, Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident and stated that the police commissioner, Ebun Oluwarotimi Adelesi, has dispatched teams of police officers, supported by hunters and vigilantes, to the town in order to search for and rescue the abductees.

The chairman of the Kwara State Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Com Oyewo Bashir, also expressed concern about the incident in a statement, urging security agencies to intervene and rescue the victims. The NUT emphasized the negative impact of such cases on the educational sector, as teachers now fear for their safety while going to school.

The NUT called upon the Kwara State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies to protect teachers from these traumatic experiences and prevent the educational sector from further deterioration. They urged for a prompt investigation into the recent kidnapping incident and the immediate release of the victims. The NUT also advised its members to be vigilant, avoid traveling late, and be cautious on deserted or abandoned roads. Prayers were offered for the safety and protection of all teachers, students, and workers.
