Earlier this month, American model Gigi Hadid and her friend found themselves in a legal situation in the Cayman Islands due to cannabis possession. As they arrived on a private jet for a holiday on July 10, their luggage was searched, leading to their detention. They later pleaded guilty in court and paid a fine, but no conviction was recorded.
Hadid’s representative explained that the marijuana was legally purchased in New York with a medical license. Furthermore, marijuana has been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. The incident did not tarnish her record, and she continued to enjoy her time on the island.
According to the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control, the arrest was made for “the importation of marijuana and importation of utensils used for the consumption of marijuana.” The amount found was small and seemed intended for personal use.
After their detention, Hadid and her friend were released on bail and appeared in the Cayman Islands summary court two days later, where they were fined 1,000 Cayman Islands dollars ($1,200; £920).
Despite the legal hiccup, Gigi Hadid appeared to make the most of her holiday, as evident in the photos she shared on Instagram, showing her enjoying the beachside getaway. Gigi Hadid is a renowned model, having collaborated with top luxury brands like Versace, Chanel, Fendi, and Marc Jacobs. She has graced the cover of Vogue magazine more than 30 times.
The Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, is known for its stunning beaches, coral reefs, and abundant marine life.
