Court Orders Kano Government to Pay Emir Bayero N10 Million

A Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the Kano State Government to pay N10 million in compensation for violating the fundamental human rights of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero.

Justice Simon Amobeda issued the order, ruling that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to arrest Aminu Bayero was unlawful, effectively placing him under house arrest.

The respondents in the case included the Attorney General of the Federation, the Attorney General of Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, the DSS, the NSCDC, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Airforce, and the Nigerian Navy.

Justice Amobeda restrained several respondents from arresting, detaining, threatening, or harassing Aminu Bayero, affirming that the Governor’s actions violated Bayero’s constitutional rights to liberty and freedom of movement. The court also denied a request for the cost of filing and prosecuting the suit due to insufficient proof.
